Hello, my name is Hui Rong ‘Christine’ Zhuge, and I am presently a billing specialist at TOC Logistics International, in Indianapolis, Indiana USA (LinkedIn profile – https://www.linkedin.com/in/hui-rong-zhuge-24a5501ba/ ). I would like to share my learning experience using a serious game and supply chain simulation app called SCM Globe.
My class used the SCM Globe simulation app and a case study called “Cincinnati Seasonings” at Ivy Tech Community College. I was taking courses for my ASCM/APICS certificate in planning and inventory management (CPIM). The SCM Globe website gives clear guidance and the app is easy to use. It is a fun learning experience. The Cincinnati Seasonings case study is a serious game for students to engage in and learn real supply chain management skills.
The SCM Globe app has two windows, Edit and Simulate. In the Edit window you improve the design of the supply chain by making changes to the 4 entities: products; facilities; vehicles; and routes. Then you switch windows and run a simulation to see how well your supply chain works and find problems. You keep improving your supply chain design and running more simulations to get the best business results in terms of monthly profits and inventory levels.
I found ways to earn monthly profits of $722,585 and I reduced inventory by 46%. I did this by keeping the inventory as low as possible with safety stock considerations. And I made sure to deliver the right amount of products to customers on time to meet their demands. This made me the winner of a supply chain competition for getting best results from running the Cincinnati Seasons simulation in my class.
The experience helped me understand and apply ideas from the courses I took for my certification. I demonstrated my ability to use the skills I learned by getting good results in the supply chain simulations. I earned my CPIM certificate this spring.
